Pay it forward – creating future leaders at AJG

4 Jul 2016

Off the back of 18 months’ rapid growth and change, the Australia business is moving into the next phase of its exciting growth story. Setting a path for future leaders is one part of a broader business strategy that is transforming Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) into an employer of choice for aspiring insurance industry professionals. What makes our story different is the people who are shaping the journey and setting the direction.

Sam Sheppard, Group HR Director provides some background, “Change is our new stability. I think this brings opportunities for people joining our team and new learning and personal growth for those already inside the business. What’s exciting, and in some cases unique, is that we have an opportunity to shape our future. That doesn’t happen many times in your career, so I for one am delighted to be in a people leadership role in a business that is committed to growth in our region.

“I started my journey with AJG as part of the Wesfarmers team involved in the acquisition of OAMPS by AJG in late 2014. Although there are some things that differ between AJG and Wesfarmers, what sits at the heart of it is fundamentally the same.

"Our shared ambition is to provide a high-performing, transparent and values-driven culture where people can achieve their full potential and contribute to something that makes a difference. Put simply, The Gallagher Way is what sets us apart from our competitors.”

Jason Grieve, Head of Learning & Development, adds: “Learning and development is integral to the way we do things at AJG. In a fast-moving business we are all constantly on the move. Interacting with our teams, connecting with colleagues across our network and working with clients every day to help them move forward. The way we do that reflects our culture and ultimately the perception of our brand.

“Taking our producers and operational colleagues to their next career level is achieved by:

  • Focusing employees’ efforts on our most important goals;
  • Clearly understanding all responsibilities associated with achieving these goals; and
  • Strengthening accountability for delivering value to our clients and the business and making this delivery measurable and visible company-wide.

"To achieve our growth ambitions we know we need to set a higher bar to support our delivery. Aside from some of the inherent challenges of doing this within a compressed timeframe, I’m surrounded by a talented, hard-working team that are making many things possible.”

Sam concludes: “We’re always on the look-out for high calibre talent in the market. To attract them to AJG means that we have to present a differentiated, high-quality experience, where we heavily invest in their personal development and growth and reward people competitively for the results they deliver.

“My advice to anyone considering a role or career opportunity at AJG is that we are a great fit for people who thrive on collaboration, have a ‘can do’ mindset and are passionate about delivering an excellent experience for our clients – internal and external.

"We’re at a unique part of our journey, so you’ll be joining a dynamic team that is going places. These are exciting times.”
